Prior to joining the CCA, Alexei worked as a research associate at the University of Ottawa in the Department of Physics, and as a postdoctoral fellow at the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research. During his academic career he investigated a range of questions at the interface of physics, chemistry, and photonics. He continues to be interested in the behaviour of light at the nanoscale, as well as the development of new spectroscopic techniques and laser sources.

Alexei holds a PhD (2014) and M.Sc. (2007) in Physics from the University of Toronto, and a B.Sc. (2005) in Physics minoring in Russian Language and Literature from McGill University.
