Lorraine Sheremeta, LLM is a Research Officer at the National Research Council’s National Institute for Nanotechnology, a Research Associate at the Health Law Institute at the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta, and a Special Advisor to Alberta Ingenuity Fund’s Strategic Programs.
Broadly, Ms. Sheremeta’s academic interests focus on the legal and regulatory issues implicated in new technologies including genetics, genomics, regenerative medicine, and nanotechnology. Much of her work has focused on the commercialization of research, the translation of research findings to society and the role of intellectual property in this process. Recently, Ms. Sheremeta’s research includes strategic risk communication and the legal and regulatory challenges raised by nanomaterials, from the environmental, human health (including occupational health and safety) and consumer product perspectives.
Ms. Sheremeta is actively involved in the research ethics community and serves on several research ethics committees including the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta Research Ethics Review Committee, the Alberta Cancerboard Animal Care Committee, the University of Alberta Hospital Clinical Ethics Committee, and the Edmonton Police Service Ethics Committee. She also sits on the Scientific Review Board of the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Society. In 2005, she served on the National Science Advisor’s Expert Panel on Nanotechnology.
