H. Scott Hurd is an Associate Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification in Foods of Animal Origin at Iowa State University. His research interests include emerging infectious diseases, food-borne pathogens, foreign animal diseases, global food safety, risk analysis, traceability and antibiotic resistance.

Dr. Hurd served as Deputy and Acting Under Secretary for Food Safety at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) from February 2008 to January 2009. He has also worked as a scientist at the USDA Agricultural Research Service and was senior epidemiologist at the USDA Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health. Dr. Hurd received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine form Iowa State University, and completed his PhD in Epidemiology and Economics at Michigan State University.
