Professor David Metz is an honorary professor at the Centre for Transport Studies at University College London (UCL). He was formerly Chief Scientist at the UK Department for Transport. Previously, Professor Metz was a member of the scientific staff of the Medical Research Council and a civil servant in various Whitehall departments, mainly in the energy sector. He was Director of the AgeNet project and a visiting professor at the Centre for Ageing and Public Health, at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Professor Metz has a B.Sc. in Chemistry and a M.Sc. in Biochemistry from UCL, and a PhD in Biophysics from King’s College London. Professor Metz’s research interests focus on the growth of travel demand, particularly as this is influenced by demographic factors, and on how this demand is met by investment in the transport system, as this is influenced by transport policy and new technologies.

Professor Metz’s most recent publication is Transport Fast or Smart? A manifesto for an intelligent transport policy, to be published in September 2016. Previous books include Peak Car: The Future of Travel (2014) and Older, Richer, Fitter: Identifying the customer needs of Britain’s ageing population (2005). He comments at www.peakcar.org.
