Dr. Brian Fleck is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta where he joined the faculty in 2000. Brian has served as the Department Chair in Mechanical Engineering (2012-2017), Faculty Director of the Association of Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (2019-2022), Board Director of the Alberta Energy Regulator (2017-2019), Board Director of the CAUT Defense Fund (2024-present), Vice-President Northern Constituencies of the Alberta NDP (2021-2022) among other board responsibilities and service.
Dr. Fleck received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Queen’s University (1998), his M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering at Laval University (1993) and his B.Sc. at the University of Alberta (1989). His research is in fluid dynamics, with focus in turbulence, mixing, combustion, atomization, HVAC, and wind power. He previously worked as an assistant professor at the Royal Military College (1998-2000) and as an on-camera host for CBC (Project-X, The Nature of Things 2008-2009). In 2019 Brian completed the Rotman School of Management Director’s Education Program.
Brian is a professional engineer registered in Alberta with APEGA. He actively works as an engineering consultant, designer and entrepreneur, having served as founder, advisor, mentor and inventor with numerous small companies. Currently he is the owner and president of Flexible Machines Corporation.
