John (Jay) Doering, FCAE

Doering obtained a B.Sc. (first class honors) in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University and a doctoral degree in Physical Oceanography (Coastal Hydraulics) from Dalhousie University. He completed his postdoctoral studies at Environment Canada’s Centre for Inland Waters in Burlington, Ontario. He began his academic career in the Department of Civil Engineering at McMaster University and then moved to the University of Manitoba in 1993.

In 1997, Doering’s affinity for administration began when he was appointed Associate Head of Civil Engineering and then, in 2001, Head of Civil Engineering. He went on to be appointed Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies in 2005. This role was expanded in 2012 to include Vice-Provost (Graduate Education). During his time as Dean of Graduate Studies, Doering served a term as president of Western Canadian Deans of Graduate Studies and two terms as president of the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies. He also served a term as a member of the board of the U.S. Council of Graduate Schools.

He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Engineers Canada, and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, and has served in executive board positions with the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, the Canadian Water Resources Association, and the Canadian Coastal Science and Engineering Association. He has remained active in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) where he has served as member of council and the awards committee. He is currently a member of EGM’s investigation committee.

As Associate Vice-President (Partnerships), Doering has oversight of the university’s research-contracts, technology transfer, internationalization, and partnerships.
