Douglas M. Peers

Dr. Douglas Peers joined the University of Waterloo in 2011 as Dean of Arts and Professor of History. He was previously Dean of Faculty of Graduate Studies and Associate Vice-President Graduate at York University from 2007 to 2011. In 2009, Dr. Peers was elected President of the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies. In 2004, he was Interim Vice-President (Programs) of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Dr. Peers received a BA (Hons) in Political Science and MA in History from the University of Calgary, and a PhD in History from the University of London (King’s College). His area of research includes the relationship between the military, imperialism, and state formation in 19th century India. Dr. Peers has participated directly in initiatives related to capturing impact of research and training, most recently on the steering committee for the Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences’ Impact initiative.

Dr. Peers has sat on a number of boards, including the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS), the management board of Aid to Scholarly Publications Program of the CFHSS, the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) for Educational Testing Services, and the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. In 1993 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
