Yves Prairie

Yves Prairie is an aquatic biogeochemist who has focused for the past two decades on various aspects of carbon biogeochemistry in lakes and reservoirs, from local to global scales. He received his PhD from McGill University in 1987 and did post-doctoral research in Germany. He has been a professor at UQAM for more than 30 years and held visiting professorships in Spain, Italy, France, and Switzerland. For nine years, he was director of the GRIL, a leading multi-university research centre in limnology. His most recent work revolves around biogenic GHGs in various types of aquatic ecosystems and is particularly interested in the interplay between biological, chemical, and physical processes in regulating the dynamics of these gases. He served on the expert panel of the IPCC working group on Flooded Lands. He is a lead author of chapter 7 in the 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. He also served as Vice-President and President of the Society of Canadian Limnologists (SCL) and, more recently, as president of International Society of Limnology (SIL, until 2019). He currently holds a UNESCO chair in Global Environmental Change.
